Greetings! My ‘monthly’ newsletters are turning out to be bi-monthly lately! Hopefully they are still fun to receive whenever I finally get them out though.

I get to take you to the United Kingdom and Ireland with this newsletter, so sit back and enjoy!

London

Free image courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net

There is a vast array of places to visit in the UK, but I’ll begin in London, the most popular destination. In fact, London happens to be hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics starting today! I can’t imagine the excitement going on there right now!

The city of London has so much to offer and much of it can be seen while walking the streets around town. You can take the Big Red double decker buses for a lovely tour of the city, or if you prefer to go underground, there is a great underground transportation system called the Tube. When I visited London a few years ago I had originally thought I would use the Tube to get around because I thought everything was going to be far, since we read about Picadilly Square, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and so on. However, when we arrived in London we found that walking was so easy and we could see so much more. Everything within Zones 1 & 2 is very close to each other.

Some of my favorite sites were the Tower of London, London Eye, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, and Hyde Park and the Thames River boat. I could go on and on about the city, but instead here is a link of anything and everything you’d like to know about London.

More United Kingdom

As you can see by this UK/Ireland map, there is much more to see than just London! One could easily spend a month between the UK and Ireland and still not see it all.

Wales is only 2 hours from London and has some beautiful National Parks, great hiking, beaches, over 600 castles, excellent golf and more! If you head further north you could even stop in Liverpool, the town that is famous for where the Beatles began their career. Or keep on going north to play some golf in Scotland with more than 500 courses to offer!

Ireland

On to Ireland … You can fly from the UK or take a ferry from Wales or Scotland. No trip to Ireland is complete without a visit the Blarney Castle and kissing the Blarney stone! But if you can’t make it there, you will have no shortage of castles to see. You will also find many pubs and great food in the towns of Ireland. Ireland is a great country to drive; I have many clients that do B&B self-drive trips throughout Ireland. The trip is set up as a coupon system with my tour operators and it allows the travelers to drive at their leisure and choose from many different B&B’s along their route to stay. Ireland is also known for its farm stays. The Irish love to share their homes with travelers. There are many ways to tour Ireland, from Independent traveling to incredible escorted tours, the choice is yours. Many times I fly my clients into Dublin and home from Shannon so they can see more of Ireland. Although there was a time when it wasn’t as safe to travel into Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland is getting more popular to travel again.

The Gathering 2013

2013 will be a great time to visit Ireland. Ireland is having a year-long celebration of all things Irish called The Gathering . There will be local gatherings organized by schools, colleges, businesses, clubs, etc. as well as many festivals. For more information, visit thewebsite here.

I could go on, but I will let you peruse the websites and come up with your own dream vacation… Please remember to keep me in mind for all your travel needs, whether it may only be a 1 night hotel stay, or a month long journey across the UK!

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Happy Spring to Everyone! Colorado has had a wonderful Springtime! The last couple of months have totally disappeared on me. I did get to travel to Puerto Vallarta with my husband, mother and other family for my uncle’s 80th birthday celebration in April, and then went to Maui for some training with a group of travel agents earlier in May. I thought about writing the newsletter on Puerto Vallarta and Maui, but this month’s focus will be about France (more specifically, Paris), Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

One of the greatest ways to get to each of these countries is by rail. Rail Europe has a 4 country pass that encompasses each of these countries. Traveling by rail gives one the opportunity to see so much of the countryside. It’s nice to plan a route so you get the most out of your vacation.

Paris is a city full of romance, culture and history highlighted through its extensive range of sights. You can take advantage of most sights with a Paris Pass. Paris is broken down by Districts (Quartiers). There are 4 districts in each Arrondissement. If you know the postal code of a hotel, you will be able to tell which District you are in because the last 2 digits of the PC is the District. The 1st Arrondissement (Called “du Louvre”) is typically the most popular to stay in. It encompasses 1,2,3 & 4 District.

Germany has so much history I could easily spend months here. From castles to cathedrals I was in awe when we were there several years ago. For the Top 10 things to see, click here. The Neuschwanstein Castle is absolutely incredible! We stayed in the town of Füssen which is a lovely little town near the castle.

Austria impresses me because of its impeccable cleanliness. They literally recycle almost everything. The countryside is breathtaking as you travel by rail to the different towns. Cattle and horses are housed many times on the lower level of a home! Austrians take very good care of their farm animals. We loved eating sausages (brats) in Austria, it was the leanest meat! Salzburg is famous for The Sound of Music, and also the birthplace of Mozart! Vienna is known for several sites, including Schönbrunn Palace and the famous Spanish riding school. For more on travelling to Austria, click here.

Switzerland is another country that has a beautiful landscape to it. We spent time in Lucerne, because Leon had some family history from there. We never found any relatives, but we truly enjoyed the beautiful Lake Lucerne and Mt. Titlis. The Aerial tram ride to the top of Mt. Titlis was fabulous. For more information on travelling to Switzerland, click here.

I know I’ve only given you a snipit of information on each of these countries, but you can click the links I included to visit some websites that will help you to delve into more information on these wonderful destinations.

Happy Travels! And remember Without a Travel Agent, you are on your OWN!

5 Things Chakel Wants To Do In Paris by Chakel Palmer

Honestly, I’ve never been to Paris, but I’ve always wanted to go and can’t wait to visit. After looking at site after site of to do’s and not to do’s of Paris, this is my list of what I think I want to do when I go to Paris. Who wants to go with me?

See the Eiffel Tower - There seems to be some discussion as to whether going to the top is worth the crowds and effort. I think I might simply settle for looking at it and perhaps eating at Les Ombres, a rooftop restaurant with a view of the Tower. If I find myself thinking “I’ve come all this way, to the top I must go,” I’ve heard early mornings or after 6pm are the best time options.

Sunset River Cruise on the Seine - It was suggested on a site to check the time of sunset when you are in Paris and schedule the sunset time river cruise. One more way to see more of the city in all the beauty a sunset adds.

Visit Some Churches and Cathedrals - I’ve always loved churches, especially old ones. Notre Dame Cathedral is very famous and is a given, and Sainte Chapelle Church is a gothic chapel built around 1248. Apparently much of the stained glass in the chapel is original and was taken down during WWII to preserve it.

Visit Some Art Museums - The Louvre or Musée D’Orsay are of course the obvious museums, but for a bit less traditional trip/less crowding, perhaps a visit to Tuileries Gardens, Musée Marmottan, Musée Rodin or one of the many other museums that fit my interests.

Eat! Eat! Eat! - Pastries, Breads, French Cuisine, etc. Frankly, I love to eat and since France is known for it’s excellent cuisine, I will want to visit cafes, bakeries, and restaruants galore… Which I suppose will be countered by choosing to flâner (literally “to stroll” or essentially “to walk the city in order to experience it”) as much as possible.

Traveler’s Ten Commandments

1. Thou shalt not expect to find things as thou hast them at home, for thou hast left home to find things different.
2. Thou shalt not take anything, especially thyself, too seriously, for a carefree mind is the beginning of a fine holiday.
3. Thou shalt take only half the clothes thou think thou needs, and twice the money.
4. Thou shalt be prepared with medication and the means to take it.
5. Know at all times where thy passport is, for a person without a passport is a person without a country.
6. Keep thy schedule ever before thee, and be thou prompt in following it.
7. Thou shalt not let other tourists get on thy nerves, for thou art paying good money to enjoy thyself.
8. Thou shalt not make thyself too obviously a tourist. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
9. Thou shalt not judge the people of a country by the one person who hast given thee trouble.
10. Remember thou art a guest in other lands, and he that treateth his host with respect shall be honored.

Boy, has February disappeared quickly! What a whirlwind month it has been. Good thing we had a leap day! I’m excited to feature the Dominican Republic in this month’s newsletter. Specifically Punta Cana, since we are privileged to have a Non-Stop flight for the Months of June and July this summer! Punta Cana has several wonderful all-inclusive resorts scattered along the beaches. I love the people in the Dominican Republic, I have found them to be quite friendly. Wouldn’t it be great to be planning your Caribbean vacation right now, while we are in the midst of this cold winter weather? There happens to be some awesome sales going on now too! The nonstop flights fly Saturday’s only, but you can fly any day of the week that fits your needs. Puerta Plata is on the Amber coast which is awesome for Surfing and boogie boarding. Most people go to one area or the other, because navigating the island is not an easy task with the lack of roads.

Enjoy perusing through this month’s letter…. Abundant Blessings….Kina

The average annual temperature hovering around 77°F. The summer season in the Dominican Republic runs from May to October. Average daily highs for the coastal/beach regions rise to around 87°F during the day, dropping down to about 72°F at night. It is the higher humidity during this period that can make it feel much hotter during this season. The mountainous interior of the country is considerably cooler.

Happy New Year! Where has the time gone? Puppies seem to have taken over my life for a while there, but now things are a little quieter. Skyler and Tess are now living the good life, so I found a good travel joke about dogs and a picture of the two happy doggies to start things off.

Joke of the Month

A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in a Midwest town he planned to visit on his vacation. He wrote: “I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?”

An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who said, “I’ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here, too.”

And Now About Cruising…

In light of the Costa Concordia disaster, I felt it would be good to have this newsletter focus on Cruising. This was a very tragic event and extraordinarily rare. Cruising is considered the safest form of commercial travel: Last year over 19 million passengers worldwide enjoyed traveling on cruises without incident! Oh the places you can go!

I have personally been on several cruises, from large ships to sail ships and even Riverboat cruising (or should I say meandering). I’ve been on ships that carry 4000 passengers and ships that carry 50-100 passengers. What I love most about cruising is the places you can see during your travels and only unpacking once! I have sailed in Alaska, Fiji, Tahiti, and been to Italy, Croatia, Greece, Belize, Honduras, Mexico and many Caribbean Islands. It’s an absolutely amazing way to see cities, towns, beaches etc. Cruises have different styles and can be laid back or a ‘dress to the hilt’ style cruise. When we went on a Riverboat in the Netherlands beginning in Amsterdam, we were able to see several historical sites along the way and enjoy the slow pace of the river and the castles and villages that speckled the land along the rivers.

Styles of Cruising: There are so many styles of cruising:

Expedition cruises, Family, Gourmet, River, Singles, World, Group, Theme, Senior, Holiday, Gay, Luxury and others. Most people have no idea that there are so many styles of cruising.

Most people are looking for the best price or ‘deal’ on a cruise and don’t consider the ‘value’ of their pricing. For instance, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, Costa and others will have some great pricing and wonderful cruises, but be aware that your sodas, alcohol, shore excursions , tipping etc. are additional charges. If you were to sail on Regent or Seabourn, you would have these items included and many times they offer free air too! This is where your travel agent comes in handy! I can help you to be aware of hidden or additional costs. You can also look at 10 hidden costs of cruising from the Cruise Critic!

Cruising Facts

456 cruise ships sailing the world

Total cruise ship capacity is currently over 425,000

90 million passengers with safe trips over the last 20 years

Over 2000 Ports of Call

Most Popular Destination in the World: The Caribbean

Almost 90% of cruise tickets are sold through travel agents!

Over 75 cruise lines!

Ready. Set. GO!

Ready to go on a cruise? There are lots of specials right now! Royal Caribbean has some special rates for Colorado Residents you can ask me about. Or for even more specials check out The Travelhound Vacations Page. Simply click the link on the page, Select “Cruises” in the “Quick Search”, Fill in any other preferences, and see the many specials you could soon be enjoying!

September and October have proved to be quite busy! Tess had 8 healthy pups this month, but I am also very excited about this months newsletter! Costa Rica is such a beautiful country with so much to offer. I love sending clients to Costa Rica, because they always come back with wonderful stories.

When I went to CR, it was not as a ‘vacation’ destination. I had the opportunity to go with a group of teens from our church on a missions trip several years ago. We got to visit the back country! At times we were on roads to nowhere it seemed like, and then we’d come to these tiny villages and meet the most awesome people! Our team hiked into the mountains to visit a village of Bribri Indians. When we arrived they looked at us quite inquisitively because as we hiked up the mountain it was very muddy in spots and we showed up looking like a bunch of dirty and tired people! They loved getting the toys and clothing that we brought to them though!

Costa Rica is such a diverse climate, with rain forests, cloud forests, beaches etc. If you want a great way to get a wonderful overview of Costa Rica, I love this tour operator: http://www.caravan.com/tour/costa-rica. Not a perfect fit? Don’t worry, there is an abundance of tours or Independent travel I can build just for you! Guanacaste is one of the favorite areas for many of my clients. It has several all-inclusive properties situated on the beach. For those that are more adventuresome, we put together a variety of places within Costa Rica. Arenal, La Fortuna, Guanacaste, Quepos, Jaco, Corcovado National Park…the possibilities are endless…

Tortuguero

A unique place to go if you like reptiles such as turtles and more….

Tortuguero which means ‘Region of Turtles’ in Spanish is nesting ground for sea turtles every year from March to mid-October. This nesting period known as the arribadas occurs when the moon is fading. Therefore, if you wish to see these turtles nest, it will be after 6:00 pm with a guide, as no one is allowed to explore the beach unaccompanied after this time. A great way to see the turtles nest is from a boat, canoe, or kayak off shore, so as not to disturb the turtles during their nesting or mating period.

Muy Delicioso!

The most typical Costa Rican Menu is called a “Casado” (Married Man”), and it is always a platter with rice, beans, cabbage or other salad, meat or fish, sweet plantains, and Picadillos. Picadillos are alway small squares of vegetables or potatoes with ground beef and sausage,(chorizo) fried together and then cooked covered until the vegetables are tender. Picadillo means “Chopped”.

Three Milks (the most popular Costa Rican dessert) 18 portions.

Batter:

5 eggs separate yolks 1 can evaporated milk; ¬ tsp. Salt 1 can condensed milk; 1 cup of sugar 1 cup whipping cream; 1/8 cup white vinegar; « cup of milk; « cup vainilla 1 tsp. vainilla; 1 « cups flour 2 tsp. de rum (Amaretto?); 2 tsp. Baking powder 2 egg yolks; « cup boiling water.

1. Preheat oven to 350§ F or 180§ C

2. Beat egg whites with salt until stiff, during 3 minutes so they are very fluffly, keep aside.

3. Beat the egg yolks, the vinegar and the vainilla separatedly during 3 minutes. Add the boiling water slowly, keep aside.

4. Sift the flower, baking powder and alternatingly fold, the egg whites, the dry ingredients and the mixture of the yolks. Pour in a greased and floured rectangular pyrex of 22 cm. Wide by 34 cm long and 4cm high and put in the oven for 25 minutes. Take it out, separate the sides, make holes with a wet knife and soak with cream of the milks.

Icing:

2 big egg whites 1 cup of sugar; « cup of water 1/8 tsp. Cream of tartar; 1/8 tsp. Lemon juice; 1/8 tsp. salt;

Put the egg whites in the beater but do not whip yet. Aside in a medium pot mis the rest of the ingredients at a moderate heat until it boils for exactly one minute making bubbles. Remove from heat, pour over the eggas and inmedialty whip. Whip for exactly 5 minutes and decorate the suface.

PURA VIDA!

PURA VIDA! Pura vida literally means Pura = pure and vida = life, but “Pure life” in Spanish would be “Vida pura” instead, so the real meaning is closer to “plenty of life”, “full of life”, “this is living!”, “going great”, “real living”,”Awesome!” or “cool!” It can be used both as a greeting and a farewell, to express satisfaction, to politely express indifference when describing something, or even to say “thank you” or “you’re welcome”. The phrase has become universally known in Costa Rica and it has been used by many Costa Ricans (and expatriates) since 1956.

Hello Travelers,

I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Chakel, Kina’s daughter-in-law and her marketing assistant. For the last several months, I’ve had the privilege of editing the newsletter, contributing to the Travelhound Facebook and Twitter pages, and soon I will also be blogging on a regular basis. Now that you know what I do, I’ll tell you a little more about myself!

On a probably cold, perhaps not too dreary March afternoon… Just kidding! I won’t bore you with all the details of my life but in short: I’m 23. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in May of 2010 with a Bachelors in Business Administration (My major was Marketing). One week later, I married Kina’s son Otto; and now I’m enjoying the married life with all of it’s adventures.

Please feel free to give feedback or suggestions on the Facebook, Twitter, and Blog. I’d love to hear from you! Till Next time…

Happy Travels,

Top 5 Destinations I’ve Never Been But Want to Visit

1. Europe

2. Australia & New Zealand

3. New York

4. Africa

5. Israel

Top 5 Destinations I’ve Been

1.Colorado – Yes I live here. And I think it will always be my Favorite. When I was at school, I missed the mountains, the good water, the view of the stars, and being able to tell which way is West.

2. Pittsburgh – Four years of college later, and I now appreciate all of the city’s culture. From the delicious food, to the art, to the theater, to the museums and libraries, Pittsburgh is a great place to spend time. Perhaps not in the hot & humid summers though.

3. Costa Rica – It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Costa Rica, but I have many fond memories there. Mostly I remember all the green and bright colors. Definitely a place I plan to visit again when I get the chance.

4. Hawaii – If you’re looking for beauty and some of the nicest people you’ve ever met, Hawaii is definitely for you. A little pricey for my liking but overall, very wonderful place.

5. Detroit/Canada – Growing up, I’ve visited this area many times and it’s a great place. My wonderful granny took us to all the museums, lots of restaurants, old churches, and then over the border to Canada. I’ve visited more times than I can count on my hands and I’ve still never been bored!

Hard to believe we are heading into our 2nd week of August already, and I haven’t gotten the Newsletter out! I have actually been in Minnesota with our dog Tess. We are breeding her with an awesome male dog!

This has been an ‘adventure’ to say the least! We had to wait until Tess came into heat before we could make the drive to Minnesota, so of course our travels were based on her timing…not ours! The mating was a success after being in Minnesota for a week. Now we wait 28 days to find out if in fact Tess is pregnant. The puppies will be born around October 10th if she is pregnant, which will begin our next adventure! Chasing little Wirehaired Pointing Griffons around for 2 months!!!!

Now, on to better things, and the reason you read this newsletter in the first place….TRAVEL! This month instead of focusing on a destination, I have decided to title the newsletter TIPS ON TRIPS! So read on, and enjoy…. Who knows, maybe you will even pick up some great pointers for your next vacation! I’d love to hear back from you on your own ‘tips’ too!

Here’s our top 10 list of things we remember not to forget. Enjoy and share what you think should never be forgotten!

Sunglasses –if you are getting on a plane at 6am, it’s easy to walk out of your house without sunglasses!

Passport/Visa’s – also, make a copy of these to put in your luggage, in case your Passport gets lost or stolen

Credit card – Call your CC company and let them know the dates and places you will be traveling, so they do not put a lock on your CC while you are traveling! I never take a debit card because if it gets ‘compromised’, your financial institution cannot protect you as well as your credit card company can.

Small bills – I typically take $100 – $200 in ones, fives and tens, for tipping etc. Also, I do not carry it on me all together. I put it in different places i.e. purse, pants (front pocket), hotel safe…

Medications – very important to NOT pack these in ‘checked’ luggage, in case luggage gets lost. Put them in a quart sized ziplock to show as you go through security.

Electronics chargers – Nothing worse than getting to your destination and your phone battery dies, and you have forgotten to bring the charger!

Reading materials – Great to have during your flights, and also during those dreaded flight delays!

Snacks – Great to have during flights, since the airlines have cut back so much on giving anything FREE to us anymore! You cannot take opened drinks through security.

Camera – Pictures are a wonderful way to remember all of your great adventures so whether you’re using your phone, a disposable camera, a digital camera, or the best camera on the planet, you won’t want to forget a camera or the good times you’ve had!

Have Fun – Sure we all can get swept up in getting from point A to point B, and doing everything on our To Do/To See list, but remember to enjoy the whole journey!

Healthy Snack ideas!

Hunger on trips can be one of those things that makes every little inconvenience almost unbearable. Here are some healthy options to save your wallet from extreme airport pricing and your tummy from the wrath of the hunger beast!

Pre sliced Apples

Cuties – less messy than oranges

Trail Mix – make your own with nuts, M&M’s, dried fruit etc.

String Cheese

Pretzels

Dried fruit – Fruit leather

Jerky

Pita Chips – don’t get as crumpled as potato chips!

Goldfish crackers

Baby carrots

Professionally, I have planned destination weddings for brides and grooms only, and other wedding celebrations that included over 80 guests. The great advantage of a destination wedding is that they can evolve into more than a wedding. They become a vacation for the attendees (typically, attendees pay their own way), and a honeymoon location for the bride and groom. They can also help all involved to avoid the usual hysteria and stress of weddings.

When planning, the most important factor for the bride and groom to decide is the destination that best fits their needs. The time of year can play a huge part. For instance, hurricane season is actually mid-June to mid-November. Another vital issue is budget. One of the major benefits of using travel planners is that they assist in navigating through the intricate details and help alleviate many headaches for the bride and groom.

Due to the current economy, this year is a great year to travel. Many destinations have been impacted by the economy and thus have sale pricing available.

Destination weddings can include various themes, such as cruises. When most people think about a cruise, the Caribbean comes to mind. But there are many wonderful places to experience on a cruise. The Mediterranean and Hawaii are good warm weather cruise locations. However, some people also like Alaska, which has a cooler climate. I have actually attended a wedding in Alaska on a small ship that had approximately 70 passengers. All of the passengers at- tended the wedding, which was held on the bow of the ship with a waterfall as the backdrop. It was breathtaking. My son is getting married this spring. He and his new wife will honeymoon in Hawaii. Their honeymoon will include some time at a hotel on Waikiki, and they intend to take a cruise to the other islands of the chain.

My son and his fiancé are both under the age of 25, so renting a car would be expensive (rental agencies charge a premium for drivers under 25). By staying on Oahu they will have public transportation available, or they can walk almost anywhere. When they are on the cruise their transportation needs will be taken care of by the cruise line (except on land, of course).

Hawaii is not only a honeymoon destination, it is also a great place to have the actual wedding. The islands are an absolutely beautiful place to have that very special wedding. Each island has beaches, waterfalls and gorgeous re- sorts. Each also has its own distinct personality, and this is one of the things that a travel planner can help with.

There are many all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, in places like Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel and others. These all-inclusive resorts are another fantastic advantage for the bride and groom (and their guests) if it is a destination wedding. At all-inclusive resorts, all of your meals, drinks and non-motorized water sports are typically included, which means that the bride and groom, along with their family and guests, have fun, entertainment and adventure at their finger-tips.

Honeymooners like to travel any- where from Glenwood Springs to Antarctica. Europe is also a very popular destination. Maybe taking a cruise in the Mediterranean or visiting the Fijian Islands of the South Pacific sounds appealing. How about simply staying a few nights in Estes Park?

Where should you start with planning your honeymoon or destination wedding? There are many steps to be taken. First of all, consider your budget and the budgets of anyone who may be expected to make the trip with you. Be sure to get your passport; it is now mandatory to have one to do any traveling outside of the United States.

Don’t be afraid to use the Internet and study. Depending on your locale of choice and budget, you may need to con- tact a professional. The ideal situation is to use the Internet to do some re- search, decide on a destination, and then consult a professional travel planner to learn of any pitfalls to your decision.

Your dream destination wedding or honeymoon is closer than you think. Kina may be contacted at 303-902- 8567 if you have questions.

Happy July!

Last month’s Newsletter featured the Islands of Hawaii. So this month we will go from glistening warm beaches to the Majestic Beauty of Alaska!

While Cruising tends to be the most popular way to see Alaska, there are so many ways to enjoy the 49th State.

If you choose to ride on the Alaska Railroad you’ll travel magnificent routes that stem from Seward to Fairbanks. You can see the awesome wonder of Denali National Park, where wildlife abound. On a clear day, you may even get to see the top of Mount McKinley.

Did you know that there are over 1500 Moose that actually live in Anchorage? You can see them walking around the streets, especially in the late winter/early spring months before they are able to go higher for their food supply.

On your visit to the islands of the Inside Passage, you’ll might find yourself in Juneau, Skagway, or Ketchikan. But, no matter which towns you visit, you’ll see that the area has a beauty all its own.

When cruising to the many towns throughout the inside passage, you will have the opportunity to see Glaciers, Whales, Eagles, Sea Otters, Puffins (my favorite bird!), Bears etc… I have had the joy of kayaking the smooth waters of the inside passage, and seen seals actually ‘pupping’ (giving birth) on icebergs! We had a seal pop up right next to our kayak, checking us out!

May is the least rainy month of the year, and the nice thing is that it tends to be the least expensive time to cruise too! Ketchikan measures Rainfall in FEET each year, not inches…

I recently received my certificate as an Anchorage Wild Expert (AWE certified).

This is another of my favorite destinations…. Enjoy this month’s Alaska focus, and feel free to email me with any questions!

What? Get Married in Alaska?YES!!!!

Alaska weddings are an absolutely memorable, unique, adventurous, and picturesque way to exchange vows with the one you love. What better place to get married than the top of Mount Alyeska or from the breathtaking expanse of an icy blue glacier? Helicopter to a mountaintop, hike to a gorgeous romantic viewpoint or tie the knot aboard a small cruise ship while passing glaciers and wildlife – the experience will be treasured for a lifetime!

Monster Veggies!

‘Round these parts, one cabbage can fill a wheelbarrow. Visit the Alaska State Fair and feast your eyes on these weighty wonders. Current record holders:

Broccoli – 39.50 lbs.

Cabbage – 105.60 lbs.

Celery – 63.30 lbs.

Mushroom – 25.30 lbs.

Pumpkin – 1019.00 lbs.

Squash – 569.00 lbs.

Anchorage Daylight Hours

Let there be light! In Anchorage, there are 24 hours of functional daylight on Summer Solstice. The further north you travel, the more sun you get in the summer; in Barrow the sun does not set for 84 days! The day with the least amount is on Winter Solstice, yet Anchorage still enjoys five hours, 28 minutes of daylight. During winter – the farther north means the fewer the daylight hours.

Balsamic and Basil Grilled Salmon

                         Serves 4

6 Salmon Fillets

3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

the juice and grated zest of two lemons

1 tablespoon dijon-style mustard

1/2 cup olive oil

1 cup tightly packed fresh basil leaves finely chopped

3 garlic cloves finely minced

1 green onion, washed, trimmed and chopped

Salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste

1. Combine all the ingredients except salmon in a non-reactive bowl. Pour over the salmon fillets. Refrigerate covered for three hours. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes before grilling.

2. Preheat the grill

3. Brush the grill lightly with oil.

4. Grill the salmon steaks over hot or high heat, basting with the remaining marinade, 5 minutes per side.

Hi There!

For those of you who have not heard from me lately. I am still full time in the travel industry and going strong. This is the start of a destination themed monthly newsletter, so I hope you get some enjoyment out of my first issue which features the beautiful Hawaiian Islands!

I truly love visiting the islands of Hawaii! Each island has it’s own special character.

I am an Oahu Master Specialist and a Hawaiian Islands Specialist!

The Hawaiian chain of islands actually consists of 132 islands! But of course 6 of them are the most traveled to, and the majority of the rest are uninhabited.

In this newsletter, I’d just like to share a few Hawaii tidbits with you….

Do you think it’s ONLY beaches? Click here for stories of the islands!

Hawaiian Language 101

Hawaii’s two official languages are Hawaiian and English. The melodious Hawaiian language is a Polynesian dialect and only has 13 letters. Vowel sounds are generally pronounced as follows:

A- ah, as in “saw”

E - ay, as in “say”

I -ee, as in “see”

O- oh, as in “so”

U- oo, as in “soon“

A few words you should know:

Aloha: A greeting with love, Hello, Good-bye and more

Hula: traditional Hawaiian dance

Weather & Time

Anytime of year is a good time to visit Hawaii. Summer, between April and November, is warmer and drier (average temperature is 75˚-88˚ F) while winter, between December and March, is a bit cooler (68˚-80˚ F). Trade winds keep things comfortable year-round. www.weather.gov/hawaii

The ocean temperature is 71-81˚F year round.

Hawaii follows Hawaii Standard Time (GMT-10 hours), which is 5 hours behind Eastern Standard Time and 2 hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time so add one extra hour to the time difference during this period (March through November).
